The COVID-19 outbreak has spurred people’s awareness in disinfection and roused demands for related products and applications. UVC LEDs with germicidal function thus become popular among consumers and brands of home appliance.

LG Electronics launched a new refrigerator with ice and water purifier using UVC LED technology. A UVC LED is equipped at the outlet of the water purifier of the refrigerator and is able to diminish 99.99% E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus based on the Korea Construction & Living Environment Research Institute (KCL) test.

LG also debuted Bluetooth earbuds with UV light equipped charging case to sanitize the earbuds while charging.

Many other UVC LED embedded applications are entering the market this year as well. Seoul Viosys announced that it is supplying violeds technology for Chinese companies Hisense and Haier to manufacture washing machine with laundry tank disinfecting and deodorizing functions.

LEDinside notices that an impact of COVID-19 on the LED industry is that, with the rising awareness in disinfection, UVC LEDs are turning into a standard component for home appliances and consumer products, making the way to the mainstream market. As a result, the market revenue of UVC LED package is expected to reach 60% CAGR from 2019 to 2024.
